The first band to play was Teenage Kamikaze, and they get better every time I see them play. Their lead singer has an incredible youthful energy and vigor on and OFF the stage. In my experience seeing shows I don’t see a lot of the bands mosh for the other bands playing.
It was also my second time seeing the Broadsiders, and again, I was not disappointed. Their songs are always catchy, and their guitarist is one of the best I’ve seen in an Oi! Band. In fact, they’ve got to be one of the best Oi! Bands I’ve seen in north Texas. They create a particular vibe of pub unity and they’re always a fun band to see.
I was really impressed with the stage antics of a Ska band called Molotov Compromise. They got people skanking, and I’m fairly certain they left some people confused with what just happened. The lead singer went about through the set, explaining a song in which he told us ultimately to determine its meaning for ourselves. Again, this band was full of youthful energy and vigor and the lead singer jumped into the pit to sing.
The Star Fucking Hipsters drew the largest crowd, and there were people at the show who came only for them, leaving after their set. This bothers me because they disrespected every other band that played after them. Nonetheless, Star Fucking Hipsters put on a kick ass show, playing all of their best songs including my personal favorite, Zombie Christ. They even ended with a cover from one of Stza’s many bands, Choking Victim.
The audience had mixed feelings about Total Chaos, the next band to play, in fact, they were even heckled by two guys in the crowd who shouted, “Play Metallica!” “Play One!”. Total Chaos doesn’t sound like Metallica at all, but I think the comments were directed at how the guitar player was sort of dressed in the fashion of a metal band. After 20 years, you would expect a band would gain some respect, but the crowd didn’t react much to them at all. Nonetheless, Total Chaos put on a decent show.
When it finally came time for the U.K. Subs to play, half of the "Fucking Hipster" crowd had left, and boy, those fucking hipsters missed out. The U.K. Subs had more energy than some of the younger bands I've seen, even. The guitar player was all over the place, and the lead singer was constantly running around, handing the mic for people to sing, and occasionally tricking them by jerking back. Anybody who left early and missed out should be sorry.
